Join the REPLICATE-CER Replication Team
Applications are now open for faculty interested in participating in the inaugural REPLICATE-CER multi-institution research study during the 2026–2027 academic year.
The Replication Team will work collaboratively to implement a shared research study examining how instructors assess student teamwork in computing courses and how better alignment between assessment practices and learning objectives influences student collaboration.
Rather than conducting the study alone, participants become part of a national community of computing education researchers working together to answer a question that no single institution could fully address on its own.

Current Research Topic
This study will examine how better aligning teamwork assessment with instructors’ intended teamwork learning objectives influences student teamwork.
Teamwork is an essential learning outcome in computing education, yet instructors use a wide variety of methods to evaluate student contributions. These assessment methods influence student behavior in different ways and may or may not reflect an instructor’s intended learning objectives.
This coordinated study will investigate how changes to teamwork assessment affect student collaboration across a diverse collection of computing courses and institutions.
What Does Participation Involve?
Replication Team members will:
- Implement the shared study protocol in one or more computing courses during the 2026–2027 academic year.
- Collect data using common instruments developed by the Replication Design Team.
- Participate in periodic virtual meetings with the project team and fellow participants.
- Share experiences and discuss implementation challenges with colleagues from other institutions.
- Contribute to a cross-site analysis of the study results.
- Have opportunities to co-author publications and presentations resulting from the project.
While the overall research protocol is shared across institutions, instructors retain flexibility to adapt implementation details to fit their local instructional context.
What Support Will Participants Receive?
Participants are not expected to develop a research study from scratch.
REPLICATE-CER provides:
- A complete study protocol and implementation guide
- Data collection instruments
- IRB guidance and template materials
- Regular mentoring from the project leadership team
- Opportunities to collaborate with computing education researchers from a wide variety of institutions
- Support throughout data collection, analysis, and dissemination
Whether this is your first multi-institution study or your twentieth, our goal is to make participation straightforward and collaborative.
Who Should Apply?
We welcome applications from faculty at all institution types, including:
- Research universities
- Master’s institutions
- Primarily undergraduate institutions
- Community colleges
- Minority-serving institutions
You do not need prior experience conducting replication studies.
Faculty with a broad range of computing education research experience are encouraged to participate.
